Top 5 Off-Road Destinations in the US: Where to Go Mudding & Off-Roading

Don't get too caught up in the details. Check out our picks for the greatest areas in the US to go mudding or off-roading with an ATV, 4x4 truck, or modified rig.

1. Hollister Hills SVRA (Hollister, California)

The State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) in Hollister Hills has 24 miles of trails, including a man-made obstacle course with a mud bog that draws large crowds on weekends. Many of the routes of this off-road course, which is located in the mountains separating the city of Hollister from the Salinas Valley, are impassable when rainy — and always a challenge.

2. Moab, Utah

Moab, located in southeastern Utah, is a well-known off-roading destination in the United States. The terrain has been a battleground for off-roaders, mountain bikers, hikers, and rafters, to the point where some trails have been restricted to off-road vehicles entirely or partially. There is, however, plenty of room for 4x4 trucks and other off-road vehicles. In the region, there are guided trail tours and Jeep rentals. Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) permits are necessary for residents and non-residents of the state.

3. Insane Terrain Off-Road Park at The Cliffs (Marseilles, Illinois)

Are you looking for some muddy fun? Off-road lovers flock to The Cliffs Insane Terrain Off-Road Park in Marseilles, Illinois. Large fields, creeks, and one treacherous mud hole can be found in this thickly wooded park; you'll have to ask park workers where it is. A few words of advice: Be wary of deep holes that appear to be simple mud puddles.

4. Redneck Yacht Club (Punta Gorda, Florida)

The Redneck Yacht Club Mud Park is located in Punta Gorda, Florida. For mudding and off-roading fans, this is the ideal location. Three mud pits, a mud track, a drive-thru buggy/ATV wash, campsites, food vendors, and much more can be found on the 800-acre park. The Redneck Yacht Club has four mud holes to select from, including Hog Waller and Gator Slough, depending on your riding inclinations.

5. Yankee Lake's Truck Night (Brookfield, Ohio)

Prepare to try off-roading through some of America's most difficult bogs. Truck Night at Yankee Lake in Brookfield, Ohio, draws large audiences who want to see high-horsepower trucks engage in muddy mud pits with entertaining games such as the rock crawl, log climb, car crush, and tug of war. From May through September, Truck Night takes place on Friday nights. Fans of off-roading should attend the season opener event, Trucks Gone Wild.
